Is ThreadCast affiliated with Reddit?

No. ThreadCast is built by Pixel Labs, an independent developer. Reddit is a trademark of Reddit, Inc. ThreadCast does not access private subreddits, bypass content policies, or store anything Reddit-related on a server.

Does it work on old Reddit (old.reddit.com)?

Yes. Both new and old Reddit are supported. The play button injects into the post header on either layout.

Does ThreadCast work on mobile?

Not via the Chrome extension, because Chrome on Android does not support extensions. The native ThreadCast Android app is live on Google Play now. The iOS app follows after.

What languages can ThreadCast read?

English at v1. The System voice engine also reads in whatever other languages your operating system already has installed, so multilingual System voices work out of the box. The on-device AI neural engines are English-only today, with more languages planned on the roadmap.

Can I download or save a Reddit thread as an audio file?

Not in v1. This request is on the roadmap for after the Premium launch, behind a privacy review to make sure offline files do not carry anything they should not.

It installed but no play button shows up. What do I do?

Refresh the Reddit tab. Chrome only injects extensions into pages loaded after install. If you are still stuck, check chrome://extensions/ to confirm ThreadCast is enabled, then visit a thread page (the play button only appears on individual posts, not on the subreddit feed).

Listen to Reddit aloud: turn threads into hands-free audio

Reddit is one of the best-written corners of the internet. In Q3 2025, Reddit reported 116.0 million daily active uniques, up 19% year over year. It is also the worst format for everywhere you actually want to consume content: driving, walking the dog, cooking, falling asleep, lifting weights, mowing the lawn. ThreadCast fixes that. Install the free extension, open any thread, hit play, and the post and comments narrate aloud while you do something else.

TL;DR. This is a free Chrome extension that reads Reddit posts and comments out loud with a different voice per commenter. One click on any thread, no account, no setup, runs entirely on your device. Works on Chrome 88+ and every Chromium browser (Edge, Brave, Arc, Vivaldi, Opera).

How does ThreadCast read Reddit out loud?

It injects a play button into every Reddit post page. Click it, and the extension pulls the OP and the comment tree, splits them into voice-friendly segments, then starts narrating. Each unique commenter gets a consistent voice, so u/foo always sounds like u/foo, even across threads. You get a floating overlay with play, pause, skip, scrubber, and a queue you can rearrange.

There is no sign-up. There is no upload. The extension activates automatically the first time you visit reddit.com or old.reddit.com after install. Refresh the tab once if you do not see the play button. Chrome only injects extensions into pages loaded after the install completes; this is documented behavior of the Chrome extensions API.

Why listen to Reddit instead of read it?

Because audio fits the moments reading cannot, and you already listen. In 2025, Edison Research found in The Infinite Dial 2025 that 79% of Americans age 12 and older listen to online audio monthly, an estimated 228 million people, with 73% listening weekly. Reddit threads are simply text waiting to join that habit.

The best threads are long, and your eyes have other jobs. AskReddit megathreads, AMAs, technical write-ups, postmortems, and “explain like I’m five” answers are exactly the kind of content that benefits from being narrated. They have natural turn-taking, a clear narrator (the OP), and a chorus of replies. The format is essentially a podcast that nobody recorded. The appetite for synthetic narration is already real: in 2025, Edison Research reported that 22% of weekly podcast listeners had listened to an AI-narrated podcast.

The other big reason: subreddits you read at night. Stories, true crime, no-sleep, glitch-in-the-matrix, mildly interesting, today-i-learned. Reading a bright phone screen at midnight delays sleep. In 2024, the Sleep Foundation reported that bright bedroom lighting can cut nightly melatonin by as much as 90 minutes versus dim light. Listening with your eyes closed does not.

What can you actually listen to?

Anything you can read on Reddit:

AskReddit megathreads. Three-hour drives become three-hour story podcasts.
AMAs. Each verified guest sounds different from the questioners. (More on that in our multi-voice guide.)
Long-form writeups. r/HobbyDrama, r/AskHistorians, r/explainlikeimfive, r/TheoryOfReddit, r/changemyview.
Programming threads. r/programming, r/ExperiencedDevs, r/cscareerquestions. Code blocks are detected and narrated cleanly.
News and analysis. Top comments often contain the actual context you came for.
Sleep content. r/nosleep, r/letsnotmeet, plus our sleep mode with voice slowed to 0.85× and ambient sound underneath.

What does the playback look like?

A small floating overlay sits at the bottom of the Reddit tab. You can:

Play / pause / skip with click or keyboard shortcuts
Scrub within the current segment by dragging the progress bar
Reorder the queue by drag-and-drop. Listen to the OP, then your three favorite top-level comments, then the rest
Switch voices mid-thread without losing your place
Adjust speed from 0.7× to 2.0× (default 1.0×; sleep mode auto-sets 0.85×)
Background it. Playback continues when you switch tabs, minimize the window, or turn the screen off (provided your OS allows background audio. Windows and macOS do by default.)

You can also pop the player out as a mini-player or hide it entirely with a single keyboard shortcut.

How do I install ThreadCast?

Three steps, sixty seconds.

Open the ThreadCast Chrome Web Store listing and click Add to Chrome
Confirm the permission prompt (we explain what each permission is for in a moment)
Visit any Reddit thread and click the new play button on the post header

That is the entire onboarding. No tutorial, no settings to configure, no voice to pick.

If you want to tune things (different voices, sleep mode, ambient sounds, author overrides, multi-voice rotation), open Settings from the popup. We have kept defaults sensible so most people never need to.

Which browsers work?

Chrome 88 or newer, plus every modern Chromium-based browser:

Can I listen to Reddit while my screen is off?

Yes on desktop. Chrome runs the extension inside an offscreen document, so playback continues across tab switches, window minimize, and screen lock as long as your OS permits background audio. Windows and macOS do this by default; some Linux desktop sessions are stricter. When we tested it on a laptop with the lid closed and external speakers, audio kept going.

This matters because so much listening now happens in the car. In 2025, Edison Research found that 40% of vehicles on the road have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, up from 26% two years prior. On Android, the ThreadCast app handles background playback natively via a foreground service with lock-screen controls. You can download it on Google Play and start listening right now.

What about privacy?

Everything runs on your device. There is one network request: the initial fetch for AI neural model weights, only when you opt into the AI engines, only the first time you use them. After that they run fully offline. No audio, no thread text, no listening history, no identity ever leaves your browser.

What does it cost?

The Chrome extension is free. Its full feature set stays free and on-device: four on-device voice engines (System plus three AI neural engines), multi-voice rotation, sleep mode, all 10 ambient tracks, and author pinning.

The upcoming Premium subscription (launches alongside the iOS app) is a separate, mobile-focused tier. It covers AI neural voices on the mobile app, cloud-sync of author overrides and queues across devices, audio export, and priority support.
